One of the great things about this game is the completely different play styles the different weapons have. It gets boring always seeing people using the same types of weapons. Of course the golden rule for game balance is; the more variety you have the harder it is to balance.
Axes, Halberds, Bows, and Hammers all seam fine, however the rest of the weapons really seam to be inferior to these.(aside from rapier and spears which i still have little experience with!)
Lances - You never see ANY lances anymore. Their longer range for its normal attack is outdone by halberds, bows, and hammers which all do a better job at keeping you safe from damage while doing superior damage.
Their special attack is nice on some of the larger monsters allowing you to hit them around 6 times, but this is useless if the damage stays at 1 no matter what type of halberd you have! It would be TOO powerful if the special damage went up by one every upgrade, so may I suggest either that every other upgrade it goes up by 1 damage, or have it do more times you hit; the more damage it does. For example with a normal lance it would do 1 1 1 1 2 2 with high 1 1 1 2 2 3 or something along those lines. This would make them worth upgrading for their special attack without making them too powerful, as you don't need to charge up to do good damage with them, but they are not as strong as axes and put you at more risk of damage.
Spears - I haven't used spears much, but they seam to suffer the same problems as lances. It seams as though spears are basically lances that can use shields and that have slightly lower stab range.
Swords - They look cool but that's about it. They have a short range, low damage, and a medium speed. Not much reason to use them. If you want a weapon with a fast speed you're better off with a rapier it would seam.
The special is a VERY cool idea, however it is also VERY difficult to use effectively. So difficult that just about everyone else chooses to drop it for a shield.(which I will cover later) Even if you would be able to get the timing right chances are you wouldn't be able to use it because you would be in the middle of a normal attack. I would really enjoy using swords if their special was worth using.
Some ideas that would make it better would be - Making the time that you block for last longer, making a countered attack stronger than a normal one(it would be VERY cool if it would do however much damage you would do normally but also reflect the enemies attack. If the enemies attack would burn the monster would be burned etc.). Having it protect on both sides would also be nice but unnecessary. My favourite idea would be to make your character flash or glow at the right point to use the special so that it isn't just guess work when to use it.
Shields - The only people that use shields either use them when not fighting for the look or people who use swords (simply because the sword special is useless at this point) The main problems with shields (besides them taking away your weapon special which I am not suggesting) is that half of the monsters give no clue as to when they are going to attack and if they do the shields are so slow to raise and lower that you would probably not be able to finish your current attack and have time to raise the shield to protect yourself. Often times when i am in the middle of lowering my shield is when the monster attacks me.
The changes I would like to see would be for them to raise and lower much faster, be able to cancel a weapon's attack with raising the shield (make sure you aren't able to swing faster by constantly raising and dropping the shield while swinging), to be able to lower the shield with the space bar (like how you can draw a weapon with space), or for a period of invulnerability after blocking an attack, to allow you to have time to drop the shield and get an attack in.
One more annoying thing is some attacks (such as the T3 boss' shockwave/air gust/ whatever you want to call it when it flies in the air and then attacks everything around it) you will successfully block the attack from the front, but since it is a ranged attack it will pass through your character and hit you from the back even though you already blocked it.
Wow I can't believe i just wrote that whole thing! Well I really enjoy this game and would enjoy to see more of the weapons to be used without hindering yourself, and these were just some ideas that came to mind while playing. I hope my suggestions would be considered. And thank you to whoever reads this because I don't know if I would were I you considering how long it is!
