This isn't related to PuppetGuardian so don't worry. But some players have mentioned a bad FaceBook virus going around:
Here is the solution from an FaceBook support forum Post (there appear to be many file names for this virus, so I suggest you use the original FaceBook post to troubleshoot: www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=20531316728&topic=5715#topic_top)
Unfortunately, this may be more than just a spam issue. I have done some digging into this particular strain, and have found that opening the link may cause a worm virus to be loaded onto your computer, depending on the variation of virus you were sent. Basically, the worm it downloads allows it to create a program that runs a program the allows it access system 32 (A.K.A., the entire operationg system for your computer). Through this, it can add, delete, and modify programs, and take any information that is saved on your computer.
Anyway, it is simple enough to deal with. Search for the file "c:\windows\fbtre9.exe" If you find this file, you are infected to some degree. You will find that you cannot simply delete this file. To remove it:
1. Reboot in safe mode
2. Using the search command in the start menu, search for the following:
c:\windows\fbtre9.exe
c:\windows\fmark2.dat
c:\windows\system32\690974
c:\windows\fbtre9.exe
ALCMTR.exe
(You may find that you do not have all of these files on your computer. If any are misssing, that is fine).
3. Delete these files as you find them.
4. Go into your recycle bin, and delete them again from there.
5. Re-search for the files (You should not be able to find them, if you do, re-delete them)
6. Re-boot in normal operating mode
7. Re-search for the files (Again, they should not be there)
8. If you find the files, restart from step 1. If the files are not there, your computer should be fine.
*NOTE* These are only the files that I have found. You will probably want to try to make sure that you do not have any other trojan software on your computer. However, this seemed to solve the problem for me.
*UPDATE*
I forgot to mention before: IT IS IMPORTANT THE YOU ALSO SEARCH FOR HIDDEN FILES.
Applies to step 2, stated above.
Start by going to do a normal search "Start>search"
Then, click on "All files and folders"
Click on "More advanced options"
Make sure that the following three items are checked:
"Search system folders"
"Search hidden files and folders"
"Search subfolders"
*ANOTHER NOTE* I'm duing all this on Windows XP. If you are running a different version of windows, everything should still work out the same, let me know if it doesn't.
*FOR MAC USERS* By the nature of this virus, you should not be infected. Your computer shouldn't have windows operating systems. If you somehow are infected, I'm afriad I have no clue how to help.
