Okay, I am tired of hearing people getting their items taken when listing items at very low prices in order to exchange items. The last straw was when I had my zoisite taken.
Now, the method I will describe to trade via the Merchant Guild isn't perfect, but I think it's safer than listing items at rock bottom prices. Simply sell the first item that is the greatest value that you wish to trade at or near the market price, but with a unique decimal value. For instance, 60.31 g or 60.27 g for a zoisite. Lower than MG value can be listed, but would be riskier. After it is sold, the person who recieves the money from this first exchange will then use this money to buy the next item to be traded, for instance a high silver halberd, which would be listed at approximately 54 g or the initial purchase minus ten percent. The net cost for the exchange is 19 percent of the initial price, but is worth it for the piece of mind. This method of exchange obviously requires a large upfront price, but many players who are willing to trade either have aquired enough gold or have the ability to support PuGu and purchase some. The worst that can happen is the items for trade get purchased by a third party for market price.
Now, other tips to trading, even when not using this method, are not to announce publicly over normal chat that you are going to trade X item for Y item, but initiate the trade over private message to your friend. Obviously it's safer trading to people you know and trust as well.

I totally agree. Heck, the safest way is to WHISPER to whoever you're talkin to! Reduces the chances of anything being stolen! XD
